Sandi Jenni
It is with sadness that we report that Sandi Jenni died in a motorbike accident on 31 August 2002. Sandi played for the women's team in 1997, 1998 and 1999 (and on and off in 2000), and also for Elizabeth in previous years. She had the best kick seen on any woman in SA, and regularly won money and/or beer from men who bet that a woman couldn’t out-kick them. She could convert from any point on the 22, and also from the centre line. The photograph shows Sandi (with the ball) playing in the Women's XV’s 1998 premiership. Sandi played at wing, or outside centre.
She leaves her father Bernhart, mother Bronwyn, sisters Rachel (her twin) and Katrin, brother-in-laws Zef and Russell, and niece and nephew Luke and Chloe. Our condolences go to each of them. Sandi is mourned by all the Old Collegians who ever took the pitch with her, and by Ray Butler, her coach. All the women playing in the two semi-finals on 8 September 2002 wore black armbands in her honour, and observed a minute of silence.
Take up our quarrel with the foe,
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Rest in peace, Sandi
