Hi! We're always looking for new players, and we'd love to hear from you if you are thinking of having a go. No experience or knowledge is necessary. Anyone older than 18 (those of you who are a bit younger than 18 may be able to get dispensation to play. Contact us to find out more). Plus, you can play rugby whether you're short, tall, thin or fat - that's one reason why we love it! Why don't you get in touch with us right now? Email us on kim@oldcollegiansrugby.org.au for more information, and browse around our website to get an idea of what we're all about.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Women's Rugby Union? Do you mean touch football? No! Not touch football! As in full contact rugby union like the Wallabies and the All Blacks play. Well, OK ... not a great deal like the Wallabies and the All Blacks play, but at least by the same rules. Fifteen aside (mostly), contested scrums, jumping in the line-outs, etc etc. Does playing a full contact sport like rugby mean you get hurt a lot? No. As a team, we've had no more injuries than any other women's sport. You do get a few scratches and bruises from time to time, but we have found that we get fewer injuries than friends playing sports like netball and hockey. Plus, we have sports trainer at every game who has first aid qualifications. When do you play? We play on Saturday mornings at about 11am, before the men's teams and generally at the same ground as the men's teams. We train on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm. The season runs from the end of March through to September each year. How young/old do I need to be? Strictly speaking, the minimum age you need to be to play rugby in S is 18, but if you are over 16 and it is physically safe for you to play we should be able to get you dispensation to play. At the moment, there is no rugby for girls in Adelaide between the ages of 12 and 15 but we hope to remedy that this year. Get in touch if you are in this agre group!. As for maximum age, there have been women who've taken up the sport in the 40s and some of our best players are in their 30s. The average age of our team is probably somewhere in the mid- late 20s at the moment, but we have current players from 17 to 35. I've never played rugby, is it hard to learn? No. If you can break into a jog and you can pass and catch a football at least half the time, we can make a rugger-girl out of you. There are a lot of rules, but you can get by with two or three to start off with. If you want to know more about the rules of the game and how to play there are links on our page about the Laws. Do I have to be fit and/or a 'big girl' to play rugby? No. Fitness comes with training, like any sport. As for size, there is a spot on the field for every size woman - that's the beauty of women's rugby! Sure, we have some girls who come at the heavier end of the spectrum, but we've got a couple you could snap like twigs (we call them "wingers") - and a whole range in between. Why would a girl want to play rugby? Simply - it's the greatest game in the world. Check out how we feel about in out our "Passion" page. It's physical, fast and at times euphoric. It's very much a team game - everyone has a role that has to be played for the team to succeed. You'll make friends (both men and women) you'll keep your whole life. And they like you to drink beer.
