2007 RESULTS

(incomplete - TBC)

14th April 2007

Shocking start to the season. Neither Port Adelaide nor Burnside could field a team, so both Souths and Old Collegians won their respective games by forfeit.

21st April 2007

Burnside withdrew from the comp, forfeiting against Port Adelaide this weekend.

Last year's grand finalists Souths and Old Collegians met again at Bailey with Souths winning convincingly 22 - 7. Despite having most of the possession, the Frocs failed to turn it into points. The Frocs were awarded a penalty try when Kate Reynolds toed a loose ball over the line only to be held off the ball by Souths' new winger. The try was converted by Tara Naige. Souths took advantage of their speed outside, running in four tries. Best Player for the Frocs (by a country mile) was the ever reliable Kristie Hume.

28th April 2007

Burnside and Port Adelaide have merged and their combined team met Old Collegiasn this weekend, leaving Souths with the bye.

Old Collegians travelled out to Port Adelaide to play in windswept and pouring conditions, winning convincingly 31 - 19. Port Adelaide put their stamp on the game early with two quick tries in the first five or so minutes. Despite not historically being a team that comes back from behind, the Frocs showed good discipline and kept battering away. After a scrum only a few metres of the line, half back Belinda Wade took a quick run down the blind side to score in the corner. Another scrum delivered clean ball to the backline and Katie Reynolds dodged through some sloppy defence to run in a 60 metre try. Another try from Port took the half time score to 19 v 12. After half time, some of the early hiccoughs were ironed out; Port Adelaide/Burnside were kept scoreless in the second half and a further three tries were run in, by Kate Reynolds, Naomi Woodstock and Liz Gabb. The three conversions were kicked by Tara Naige. This was a great result for the team who have already suffered some unfortunate injuries and absences at this early stage of the season. Best Player for the Frocs: Belinda Wade.

12th May 2007

The merged Burnside and Port Adelaide had, at one point, 13 players, with the result being that they and Old Collegians played 11 aside, 12 aside and even 13 aside this weekend.

Port Adelaide were the clear winners, 24 to 14. The game played not dissimilarly to our last outing against them at Port Adelaide, with them scoring four good tries in the first half and early in the second half thanks to strong running combination of Lee Fata and Lee Fry in the centres. Old Collegians fought back well against the 24 - 0 lead and played good running rugby and won a great deal of possession in the last third of the game. Two excellent tries were scored by the speedy fullback, new recruit Phoebe Hope, and copnverted by Tara Naige. However, it was too little, too late. Best Player for the Frocs: Kate Reynolds.

2006 RESULTS

22 April 2006 - Port 0 v Old Colls 22

A good start to the season by the Frocs. Port fielded 14 to the Frocs' 15, with Port losing one to injury in the first half and another two to work commitments towards the end of the second half. Both teams were held scoreless in an even competition until the end of the first half when the Frocs' fitness and numbers overwhelmed the Port side in a streak of good, team tries. Tries: Susan Brookes (2), Kate Reynolds and Bec Manson , Conv: Tara Naige. Best Player : Kristie Hume.

29 April 2006 - Burnside 24 v Old Colls 15

A disappointing result for the Frocs. While they held the vast majority of possession and territory, won their own and some of Burnside's scrums and lineouts, spread the ball out wide and scored three good team tries, they failed to defend against Burnside's amazing Li Fata who scored all Burnside's points, cutting through the Frocs' defence over and over again. Tries: Kate Reynolds (2) and Zoe Woodstock. Best Player: Kristie Hume.

6 May 2006 - Southern Suburbs 15 v Old Colls 12

Seriously NOT our finest hour! Despite good advice from our coaches (ignored) and a five player overlap (squandered), we were beaten by Souths who to their credit payed a good, hard, disciplined team-game. By contrast, our forwards' support play was slow and ineffective allowing Souths to pilfer our ball and make the best use of their own and our backs failed to use the overlap, with the ball being passed to the wing only once or twice in the whole game. Better teamwork next time, girls! On the positive side, there were some great moments from newbies Deb, Emma & Nadia who are doing better and better every game. Tries: Lusia Raikiwasa and Tara Naige. Best Player: Imogen Hume.

13 May 2006 - Port 5 v Old Colls 0

While we lost the game, we put up a great fight and all girls did well, especially the several girls playing out of their usual positions. We tried out a lot of new combinations which will give us greater depth for the rest of the season. There was some great defence over about 15 intense minutes with Port camped on the tryline, including one try being held up. There were also some great moments in attack, including great runs by each and every member of the backline, but we didn't manage to turn those moments into points. Port played their typical passionate and relentless game and deserved their win. It is interesting to note that this is the first game we can remember for the last few years which we played with fewer girls than our opposition (12 to Port's 13). However, everyone's work rates were exceptional and the overlap made little difference to the game. Particular commendations go to Kelly O'Neill, Deb Richardson and Naomi Woodstock who were a brand new front row combination and peformed very well, and to relative newbies Jen Latte and Em Slater who also had great games. Best Player: Zoe Woodstock.

20 May 2006 - Burnside 27 v Old Colls 20

A great effort, despite the loss. Everyone played well, again with many people in unfamiliar positions and with fewer players than the opposition. Patchy defence saw Burnside run in five good tries agianst the Frocs four, with the result never looking like a sure thing either way. Tries: Lusia Raikiwasa, Kate Reynolds and Kim Evans (2). Best Player: Susan "Junior" Brooks.

27 May 2006 - Old Colls 17 v Southern Suburbs 10

At last a win! Despite still having a few key absences and people playing in unfamiliar positions, we are playing much better than the early games of the season. While there was 20 good minutes of rugby from everyone, the rest was a bit ordinary. Greater concentration at the breakdown would help.We had numbers over Souths again, and failed to take advantage of that again. Well done to try scorers Zoe Woodstock, Susan "Junior" Brooks and Tara Naige. Best Player: Zoe Woodtock

3 June 2006 - Old Colls 5 v Port Adelaide 19

Try: Kim Evans. Best Player: Imogen Hume

17 June 2006 - Burnside/Elizabeth 10 v Old Colls 17

A better performance and a win despite playing 13 on Burnside's 15. We played a good, solid, positive team game. All of our tries were scored after a series of controlled phases, and were well set up, team efforts. We were two tries down after the first half and it is to everyone's credit that we did not drop our heads back came back to score three times in the second half. Great scrumming, great running, great defence against the overlap. Well done, team! Try scorers: Tara Naige, Nadia Blake and Naomi Woodstock. Best Players: Deb Richardson, Kelly O'Neill, Tara Naige

24 June 2006 - Southern Suburbs 37 v Old Colls 0

Eeeeeek. The less said the better! Best player: Zoe Woodstock.

15 July 2006 - Old Collegians 10 v Port Adelaide 5

A good game, with all of us getting used to having our state players back at training so we are able to try some new patterns. Tries: Tara Naige and Kate Reynolds. Best Player: Lusia Raikiwasa.

22 July 2006 - Old Colls 20 v Burnside/Elizabeth 0 (forfeit)

29 July 2006 - Southern Suburbs 12 v Old Colls 10

A heart-breakingly close game; only a conversion the difference and no points scored in the second half. Much better than our last outing against Souths; our defence is getting stronger but we need to learn how to use an overlap. Elysha, returning to Canada, played her last game for us and we'll miss her! Junior broke her collarbone and is out for the rest of the season and we'll miss her too. However, welcome to Tara Eliades who played her first game of Union and did a great job! Tries: Kim Evans (2) Best Player: Bec Manson

5 August 2006 - Port Adelaide 5 v Old Colls 0

The result was close, the game was closer. Port's try came in the very first moments of the game; we were asleep and they took advantage of it. Thereafter, it was a fairly even contest with both teams sharing possession and neither team ever really having the upper hand. We seemed confused by the various patterns we are trying to play and we failed to come together as a team. Better attendance at training would make a big difference. Best Player: Lusia Raikiwasa

12 August 2006 - Burnside/Elizabeth 12 v Old Colls 39

A good win, but knowing what the Souths girls did against Burnside last week we would have felt pretty average by comparison with anything less! Burnside didn't have enough girls and for once we actually made use of our overlap. The game was called short due to an injury to a Burnside player, and Lee Fata exited the field hakf way through the second half to rest herself for her upcoming trip to the Women's World Cup. Great performances by the whole team wiuth each girl playing her best rugby at one point or the other. Great ball was passed through the backs all the way from the half to the wing, with Lusia drawing Lee's tackle and giving good clean ball to her outside backs. There was great tackling and workrate from the flankers, including Nadia who is new the forwards. There were some great hit-ups from Naomi, Jen and Kelly in the second row and number 8. Two great tries (and a third set up) by the New Tara, and the Old Tara playing a great game at fullback. The front row typically had a solid game of scrumming and phase work. We missed Zoe Woodstock and Susan "Junior" Brooks, both sidelined by injury, but it was great to see the team do so well without key players. Tries: Kate Reynold (3), Tara Eliades (2), Lusia Raikiwasa, Bec Manson. Conversions: Tara Naige (2). ,Best Player: Bec Manson

19 August 2006 - Old Collegians 5 v Southern Suburbs 43

26 August 2006 - Port Adelaide 0 v Old Collegians 21

2 September 2006 - Semi-Final - Port Adelaide 13 v Southern Suburbs 29

2 September 2006 - Semi-Final - Burnside 0 v Old Collegians 20 (forfeit, very sad!)

9 September - Preliminary Final - Port Adelaide 0 v Old Collegians 7

A painful, painful game. The only try was scored by Bec Manson, in overtime. Had it been nil all at full time, Port would have advanced to teh GF as they finished higher on the ladder. Messy, scrappy and with very little advance by either team. Defense was better than it's been in ages, including holding Port off the very tryline for 15 minutes. Unfortunately, an injury to Tara Eliades ruled her out for the Grand Final.

16 September - Grand Final - Southern Suburbs 52 v Old Collegians 10

Not a great performance by OC's at all. We had lost Bec Manson to a serious injury at training, Tara Eliades to a broken wrist in the Prelim, Kelly (off to Europe on a poorly planned holiday!) and Junior, who wasn't yet to fit to return after her broken collar bone. It's been the worst year for injuries in years and years! Having had strong numbers for most of the year, we were a bit light on against Souths who, for once, had 15! That takes nothing away from Souths though; they played their typically strong game and we simply failed to match them in both the backs and forwards. A great effort from Jess Turvey, who played her first ever full game and did well.

2005 RESULTS

17 September 2005 - Grand Final - Old Collegians 3 v Southern Suburbs 12

The Frocs put the first points on the board, with Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd kicking a penalty early in the game. However, despite having more than 70% of possession the Frocs were unable to penetrate Souths defensive line and convert that possession into tries. There were some good performances all round but South's strong back line made more of the little possession they had. The score could have been worse, with a number of “run-aways” being stopped short by great cover defence from full back, Belinda Wade.

10 September 2005 - Elimination Final - Old Collegians 8 v Port Adelaide 3

Congratulations to the Frocs who defeated Port Adelaide and secured themselves a berth in Grand Final on 17 th September. Typically for a game against Port Adelaide, who have been much improved this year thanks partly to the addition of a few players from the folded Uni team, this was a close, physical and scrappy contest. The only try of the day was scored from at the base of the scrum as the dominant Frocs' forwards pushed the scrum 10 metres to get it over the tryline. The penalty goal was kicked by Beck Derbyshire-Lloyd, while Port's penalty was kicked by Bec Smith. Port was overwhelmed in the forwards as the girls from Old Collegians pushed nearly every maul and scrum further and further back . The advantage in the scrums was somewhat cancelled out by the Ref allowing Port to drop its flankers off the scrum and into their backline. In open play, both the backs and forwards had some great passages of play, with the ball being recycled quickly. There were several long, stylish and evasive runs, particularly from Lusia Raikiwasa and Kate Reynolds. The Frocs didn't make it easy on themselves, giving away a series of pointless penalties in the second half and being forced to defend their tryline for nearly 20 minutes against a firey Port Adelaide. At the end of the day, despite lapses in discipline the Frocs maintained the lead and won the game through sheer gritty determination and a lot of hard work. The Best Forward was Imogen Hume and the Best Back was Candy Daniel.

3 September 2005 - Semi Final - Southern Suburbs 12 v Old Collegians 0

Old Collegians lost the Semi Final in a performance well beneath their potential. The very wet conditions lead to a high number of handling errors, particularly on a number of occasions when the Frocs could have scored. Fortunately, they have a second chance at making it to the Grand Final and will play Port Adelaide in the Elimination Final on 10th September at 11.00am. Best Forward was Bec Manson, Best Back was Tara Naige.

20 August - Burnside 0 v Old Collegians 82

A great win in the Frocs' last game of the minor round. The score was particularly impressive as it was pouring with rain for most of the game, the pitch was gluggy and slow and the ball was slippery and heavy. The twelve tries were scored by Kate Reynolds (4), Zoë Woodstock (2), Belinda Wade (2), Lusia Raikiwasa, Kim Evans and Bec Manson. Beck Derbyshire Lloyd kicked an incredible 11 conversions. The girls had excellent communication, ball skills and structure despite the conditions. There were good performances from every member of the team. This win is the biggest margin the Frocs have racked up since about 1999 and is a great way to head into finals!

30 July - Port Adelaide 8 v Old Collegians 8

The try was scored by Beck Derbyshire-Lloyd who also kicked the penalty. Bec Manson was the best player on the day, again. The Frocs had a great deal of possession. Support play was generally good and the backs had excellent depth, speed and hands but we failed to penetrate. We again failed to play to our strengths and while we did not give away as many penalties as in the previous game, discipline was again dissappointing with a penalty awarded for backchat, Tara Naige again being yellow carded (this time for high tackles) and the team's attitude being less than positive.

The Frocs gained a good share of possession from set play early in the first half and tried to gain ground by spinning the ball to the outside backs who ran hard when allowed to by the Port defenders. The Frocs' forwards played soundly most of the time, although they occasionally faced problems caused by lineout infringements. A few handling errors provided setbacks when players appeared to have set up promising attacking moves, but we did well to hold territorial advantage for long spells. The Frocs' defence was solid enough to prevent Port from creating attacking movements that threatened our line, except on one occasion. This was when they drove play into our 22 and retained enough possession to cross our line just before half time and score their only try for the day. The Frocs pressed hard after half time, drove play into the Port 22, forced a couple of great breaks and eventually scored the equaliser. Players contested the remainder of the match evenly; both sides had periods when their defence was keenly tested. We still had a big share of possession and territory, but found it difficult to cut through tight defence, despite having a speed advantage. Port looked menacing at one stage when we gave away a series of penalty kicks inside our 22. We turned the tide with a long kick up field and attacked inside Port territory for a considerable time, but Port hampered our efforts by bustling us into errors at crucial moments. Our backing up was sound and handling was generally good, except on a few occasions. Both sides kicked a penalty goal before the final whistle. The women's competition approaches a fascinating finals series; the Frocs deserve much more support from the sidelines.

23 July - Southern Suburbs 15 v Old Collegians 14

TheFrocs' two tries were scored by Zoë Woodstock and Kate Reynolds, with Beck Derbyshire-Lloyd making both conversions. Bec Manson was the best player on the day. The girls were sorry to lose this game, and particularly by such a small margin. They looked absolutely unstoppable in extended passages of play but let themselves down in between by giving away many pointless and undisciplined penalties.

16 July - Bye

9 July - Old Collegians win - forfeit by Burnside

Bah humbug!

2 July - Old Collegians 12 v Port Adelaide 7

This was our third win in a row after our previous decline in form but it was a scrappier display than the last two weeks. To their credit, Port Adelaide strongly contested scrums throughout, although at first they tried to play without one of their flankers on the scrum. The first try of the day was scored by the home team, Port Adelaide, when one of our passes was intercepted. Old Colls failed to reclaim control in the following chaotic series of tackles, rucks and loose ball and Port eventually crossed the line and converted. Despite having most of the possession in the first half, Old Colls failed to score. The girls from Old Colls lifted their game in the second half and quickly scored twice. The first was scored by Captain/no 8, Zoë Woodstock, bursting through the defensive line after receiving a good fast ball from tighthead prop, Lusia Raikiwasa, who had already made significant yards herself in one of her characteristic charges up the field. The try was converted by Beck Derbyshire-Lloyd. The poorly managed scrums and rucks aggravated and rattled both teams and resulted in raised aggression and lowered discipline across the board. This in turn led to the yellow cards being given to Old Collegians' outside centre Tara Naige for "talk" and to Port's fullback, "Spriggsy", for slapping. The Old Colls girls buckled down and the second try was scored in a stylish effort from Belinda Wade (fullback) and Kate Reynolds (outside centre) both playing out of position in the centres while Tara waite dout her yellow card. They spotted a gap opening up in the Port line and Belinda delivered clean fast ball back inside for Kate to dash and weave through the defenders and score under the posts. Port looked dangerous for the rest of the game but were kept at bay. The best player on the day was Candice Daniel with great day at five eight. Congratulations to Beth and Bec Mullane who both played their first full games.

25 June - Old Collegians 12 v Southern Suburbs 5

Another strong performance from both backs and forwards playing well together. To our disappointment, Southern Suburbs elected to go to uncontested scrums in the first half, but at least they were forced to match numbers in the scrums despite their wish to let their flankers loose in the back line. The lack of scrums meant all forwards had much more energy in open play, but Southern Suburbs made little of that potential advantage. Our defence remained effective, notwithstanding the force of the ruck and maul and the repeated infringements by Souths. The two tries were scored by fullback Belinda Wade and outside centre Kate Reynolds from (mostly) good, clean ball through the hands in the backline. The conversion was kicked by Tara Naige, playing in the centres. The best player on the day was Belinda Wade. Congratulations to Beth who made her first appearance for the Frocs and had a great run down the wing and provided solid support at breakdowns.

18 June - Old Collegians 13 v Burnside 0

A much better performance than the last few losses, with a structured game and good performances from both backs and forwards. Many passages of play were as clinical, fast and furious as we could possibly want. Burnside are always a dangerous team, but were kept at bay successfully, rarely entering into their attacking half and then generally only from kicks into touch. The two tries were scored by fullback Belinda Wade and winger Susan Brooks, both good "team" tries set up by a series of fast, clean phases. The penalty was kicked by flyhalf Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd. The best player on the day was Bec Manson on the openside flank , who has been much missed in the last few weeks.

4 June - Old Collegians 5 v Port Adelaide 32

28 May   - Old Collegians 15 v Souths 19

Poor mauling by the forwards in the first half left the Old Collegians' backs with very little ball and ended with Souths being up 14 - 0. A better second half saw Old Collegians dominate at the ruck instead, and setting up three tries including a great one from Kate running through a number of defenders. Old Collegians spent the last ten minutes just off the try-line, with two tries held up by the solid Souths defence which ultimately won them the game.

14 May   - Old Collegians 24 v Burnside 26

7 May   - Old Collegians 19 v Port Adelaide7

30 April  - Old Collegians 5 v Souths 10

16 April  - Old Collegians 15 v Burnside 12

A much better performance this week, with all players performing excellently. Both sides had full numbers and Burnside is looking much stronger this year with Li Fata and Jo Bathern in its backline. Both of Burnside's tries were scored in the first half through some patchy OC defence, by Li and her trademark breaks. OC's first try was scored by Susan "Junior" Brooks in her first game for 2005 - she's clearly lost no speed over summer! Shortly afterwards, our forwards mauled the ball 15 metres up the side of the pitch after a lineout and the backs then flung the ball out wide, with Tara Naige ultimately scoring OC's second try. The OC piggies were typically dominant in the scrums. In the second half, Imogen Hume took advantage of a tighthead to make a break up the blindside. Three phases later and Imogen had the ball again and was dashing across the pitch and when caught delivered a tidy inside pop which put Kim Evans (in her first game at halfback) in a gap through which she drive over the line to score OC's final try. The Frocs have now defeated every team in the competition and are top of the table.

In the other game of this round, Port Adelaide defeated Southern Suburbs 45 to 10. Souths were only able to field 12 against Port's 14. Port are obviously better at using an overlap that we are!

9 April  - Old Collegians 28 v Port Adelaide 0

This game was an excellent performance in the first half, although we lost momentum and did not play to our strengths in the second half. Port started with only 11 against our 15 but as girls arrived during the game they had 14 by half time. We played 35 minute halves despite the weather (32 degrees). The tries were scored by Lusia Raikiwasa and Belinda Wade (3). Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd had another great day on the boot, converting all four of the four tries. Congratulations to the piggies who won all but a handful of scrums on the day, taking tighthead after tighthead after tighthead!

This was the only game of this round - Burnside and Souths deferred their game to a later date.

2 April  - Old Collegians 26 v Southern Suburbs 0

This game was an excellent first outing for the year, at Onkaparinga. Souths fielded 12 against our 15 and we played 25 minute halves due to the weather (35 degrees). The first try was scored moments before half time by Kate Reynolds, playing at fullback. Kate cleanly took a kick from Souths which failed to find touch and made a spectacular 70 m run, evading a number of opposition players. The other three tries were scored by Kath Cherry, Bec Manson and Tara Naige. Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd had a great day on the boot, converting three of the four tries.

In the other game of the round, Burnside defeated Port by about 25 - 0. Burnside fielded 14 against Port Adelaide's 15 (Port also had a couple of reserves, which is great to see). Burnside lost Kylie and Li during the game as a result of a three way head collision that left the Port girl unharmed and Li with stitches!

ELIZABETH SEVENS: The Frocs' Sevens team consisted of Katherine Cherry, Candice Daniel, Liz Dean, Rebecca Derbyshire-Lloyd, Kim Evans, Tara Naige, Kelly O'Neill, Kate Reynolds, Naomi Woodstock and Zoë Woodstock. It was a pity that only three clubs fielded women's teams in the sevens, but realistically it was only those three teams who would have been competitive in any event. The Frocs drew their first game against Souths (a horrible echo from last year's final…) and barely lost to Burnside, thanks to a try being scored by Burnside after the final siren, Lemony Snicketts style – due only to a “a series of unfortunate events”. However, in the final Burnside proved they did not need luck to win, beating the Frocs convincingly on the scoreboard despite the relatively even competition. 11 September - SEMI FINAL - Old Collegians 10 v University 0

The Frocs beat Uni (10 - nil) in the semi-final on 11 Sept. This makes five victories from five games against Uni this year (one of which was a forfeit). Each of those games have been an even and physical contest against a bigger team, but this victory was one of the clearest wins against Uni in 2004. Interestingly, the team on the day was very much the same team that lost to Uni in the same final in 2002. The first try was scored by Bec Manson within minutes of the kick off, and the second try (by Beck Derbyshire-Lloyd) followed later in the first half off a penalty in the 22. Best players on the day were Susan "Junior" Brooks, Zoe Woodstock and Lusia Raikiwasa. Junior had a magnificent day at fullback, taking a number of high balls and running them back, slipping through tackles and generally tearing up the pitch. Zoe, as usual, had a great game at Number 8, dominating the rucks and mauls and hitting the ball up effectively. Lusia, our star prop playing out of position in the centres most of the game, made her presence felt as only Lusia can - by bulldozing over the top of anyone who got in her way! Great work was put in by the backs, particularly in cover defence, and the forwards did well in a scrum where their opposition must have outweighed them by close to 100kg! All girls played well, and should be proud not only of the work done this Saturday, but of the efforts they have put in as a team all year to get them to this point. It has been a trying year for the Frocs. They have lost three important players for the season to injury/emigration, they were missing experienced halfbacks and 5/8s for several weeks midseason, NINE of the senior players were absent from training during the lead up to the Nationals , and there has been an unlucky spate of illness in the captain and the coach leading into finals. Nevertheless, the girls are playing their best rugby, with the last game in the minor round being the best score they've put on the board in three years! This was the first grand final they've contested for since 1999, thanks to the efforts of every girl on the squad.

18 September - GRAND FINAL - Old Collegians 10 v Souths 10 (Premiership awarded to Souths, as minor premiers)

Many spectators have said that the 2004 women's grand final on 18 September was the best game of rugby of any division on the day. It was certainty the best game of rugby the Frocs have played for many years, coming together as a unified and solid team of skilled and committed ruggers. The Frocs had a challenge before them, notwithstanding that Souths had lost a couple of key players in Li and Emma. While the Frocs might be forgiven for feeling they were the better team on the day and deserved a different result, ultimately Southern Suburbs have clearly been the best team in 2004 and their premiership is well deserved. The Frocs can nevertheless hold their heads high, having made their whole club very proud and having presented a showcase for women's rugby. As Jesse James (font of all wisdom) has said to some of the girls, we will play and win many mediocre games in our lives but there will be very few games (win or lose) which are as good, as exciting or as well played as the grand final on 18 September 2004.

Old Collegians FROCS achieved the biggest upset result of the 2004 women's competition when we drew 10-10 with Southern Suburbs in the grand final at Bailey Reserve after playing extra time. Souths, however, won the premiership trophy because they led the competition ladder at the end of the minor round, having dominated the 15 match tournament with a for and against point difference exceeding 600 points. Colls finished in second position with a point difference approaching 200, well ahead of University in third spot. In the semi-finals, Souths beat Burnside 70-0, while Colls defeated University 10-0; clear indications of what a superb result the grand final produced for our girls. With the increase in playing membership and greater rugby skills that we have witnessed this year, let's hope next season generates even more success. The grand final team, in player order, comprised K. Hume, M. Moran, L. Raikiwasa, N. Woodstock, K. Evans, I. Hume (captain), R. Manson, Z. Woodstock, T. Hume, T. Naige, R. Derbyshire-Lloyd, B. Wade, K. Reynolds, E. Faehrmann, S. Brooks, K. Cherry, K. O'Neill, K. Stanton, N. Regler, S. Faehrmann, P. Abbott and J. Knuckey.

The FROCS grasped the initiative after the kick-off, keeping the action centred in Souths' 22 for a long time by keeping focused on the ball. We won plenty of possession from scrums and lineouts, tried to set up penetrative passing movements and gave solid support at the breakdown when we ran into opponents who were desperate to stop us from making headway. A little mishandling of the ball and misdirection of our passes hampered our efforts at times, but Souths couldn't take enough advantage from our mistakes to create constructive counter attacks. On the only occasion their backline accelerated with a degree of co-ordination, they strode past tacklers and broke through for their first try. We continued to hold massive territorial advantage and possession until half time, but failed to cross the goal line. By responding quickly, Souths blocked off openings in the centres. Our passing movements tended to drift across the pitch, making very little headway into attack. Unfortunately, we were a little hesitant in initiating and executing our attack system, thus we couldn't spin the ball fast enough to beat the defence.

Souths had more of the ball early in the second half and looked much more threatening than before. They had a bit more drive in the forwards and their backs supported each other with more surety. The FROCS however, still had the advantage in set play. Despite facing a big pack, our forwards gained ball from some of Souths' scrum put-ins, and our lineout work was excellent. It took a while to get back into Souths' area, but when we did we showed more purpose in attack than previously. After good work by our forwards, we got the ball quickly out to Belinda Wade who dashed past defenders to score the important equalizing try. We had the edge over Souths for the remaining normal time, but were unable to score again. The next score didn't occur until the second portion of extra time. We took a shot at a penalty goal, but the ball fell short and Souths' clearing kick went askew into touch less than 10 metres from their goal line. We won the ensuing lineout, took the ball into a maul, rolled it past the line, and secured the ball on the ground for a try. This was as good an effort as we saw in any of the grand finals that day. With very little time left, both sides made mistakes as they strove to gain control of the ball. The ball landed near the sideline after a penalty kick, and we failed to secure it. Souths kept the ball in play, evaded tackles and worked their way along the touchline to get the try that leveled the scores. It was a devastating moment, however each of the FROCS had played really well to come so close to winning the game.
